Just the Facts Book Discussion

Our Just the Facts Book Club discusses great new nonfiction titles every month! Meetings are in-person, taking place in Meeting Room C at the Bowling Green Library.

June 27 - My Remarkable Journey: A Memoir by Katherine Johnson

The remarkable woman at heart of the smash New York Times bestseller and Oscar-winning film "Hidden Figures" tells the full story of her life, including what it took to work at NASA, help land the first man on the moon, and live through a century of turmoil and change.

July 25 - Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World by Irene Vallejo Moreu

Through nimble interpretations of the classics, playful and moving anecdotes about her own encounters with the written word, and fascinating stories from history, Vallejo weaves a marvelous tapestry of Western culture’s foundations and identifies the humanist values that helped make us who we are today. At its heart a spirited love letter to language itself, Papyrus takes readers on a journey across the centuries to discover how a simple reed grown along the banks of the Nile would give birth to a rich and cherished culture.

August 22 - Eating to Extinction: The World's Rarest Foods and Why We Need to Save Them by Dan Saladino

From an Indigenous American chef refining precolonial recipes to farmers tending Geechee red peas on the Sea Islands of Georgia, the individuals profiled in Eating to Extinction are essential guides to treasured foods that have endured in the face of rampant sameness and standardization. They also provide a roadmap to a food system that is healthier, more robust, and, above all, richer in flavor and meaning.

September 26 - Koala: A Natural History and an Uncertain Future by Danielle Clode

Deeply researched and filled with wonder, Koala is both a tender and inquisitive paean to a species unlike any other and a call to ensure its survival.

October 24 - The World Beneath Their Feet: Mountaineering, Madness, and the Deadly Race to Summit the Himalayas by Scott Ellsworth

Climbing the Himalayas was the Greatest Generation's moonshot-one that was clouded by the onset of war and then, incredibly, fully accomplished. A gritty, fascinating history that promises to enrapture fans of Hampton Sides, Erik Larson, Jon Krakauer, and Laura Hillenbrand, The World Beneath Their Feet brings this forgotten story back to life.
